Kyatanamakki Hill Trek
Date: 31 December 2022
Mode: Private Vehicle
Post Covid-19 I took biking as a hobby and started bike rides near by places around Bengaluru and I liked taking up solo adventure rides as I liked exploring new places other than the ride as well. Have trekked few nearby trekking spot on a solo expedition around Bengaluru like Savanadurga, Hutridurga, Antaragange, Kailasagiri.. Etc. I wanted to explore more starting from Western Ghats for trekking & was looking a way out to start the process as these treks needs a support system which can guide you to complete them. My cousin had been to one such organized trek to Kedarnath with Mad Adventures team earlier, so she told me I can join such team for organized treks. And there it was year 2022 was ending, I didn't had any crazy plans to do and in the insta feed I saw Mad Adventures had a upcoming trekking event for the new year trip so I just went ahead and booked a slot for Kyatanamakki Trek. This is my first group trekking experience with a professional team.
The Plan
Well no work for me this time as it was fully paid organized trekking event by Mad Adventures. It starts from pick up from Bengaluru, the complete trek and some sight seeing and finally the drop to Bengaluru. We were 23 members and two tempo traveler vehicle were booked for travelling duties which started on 30th Dec 2022 9:30 pm and ended by 11:30pm 1st Jan 2023. And a home stay was booked near Hornadu for the overnight stay and refreshments.
The Outline
Western Ghats aka Sahyadri Mountain range is famous for many trekking spots just to name a few are Kumara Parvatha, Dattagiri Hill Range, Kudremukh, Kodachadri, Mullayanagiri which are famous in Karnataka. One among them is Kyatanamakki hills which is located near Hornadu Temple city. As per itinerary the plan was exploring Kyatanamakki hills, Unexplored Caves, Basavapura Waterfalls, Sunset, New Year Celebrations, Hornadu Temple, Suramane Waterfalls. Itinerary got slightly changed as per conditions and in a group event such things are bound to happen so instead of Suramane Waterfalls we had a glimpse of Halebidu temple to end the journey.
Day 1
Kyatanamakki Hill Station
After a overnight journey from Bengaluru we reached home stay around 7 am in the morning. Everyone got freshen up had a wholesome breakfast at the home stay which was simple yet filling. We packed up lunch along with some snacks and a water bottle for the trek, it's fairly simple trek with not much of elevation gain on the path. By the time we started day 1 of the trek it was already 10 am and our local tour guide along with the trek lead took all us first to the caves where we will see a small jain temple
Meanwhile on the way to the cave's the path had a small water stream and some scenic places
Doddana shetty cave
After relaxing for a while we all started to next spot Basavapura Waterfalls, it's a small waterfall where the water falls from a height not more than 5 ft. No space for swimming but after a trek of 5 km it's just the best place to relax and play in water
I tracked the overall trek till the waterfall in Strava but somehow during the water activities I ended the tracking. We had covered 5km at this moment and from here till Gail Gudda and return back to base to our homestay we covered another 5km which I couldn't track.
We were exhausted and after playing for quite sometime in water we finished our packed lunch along with some snacks. By the time time we started to the next peak Gail Gudda it was around 1 pm and sun was in its heights of punishing heat. The energy levels were down due to the heat but the final peak was still not done, so with all the energy that is left within us we started the trek to Gali Gudda. To reach there we need climb one small hill first and then reach Gali Gudda, but the climb towards the first hill is quite steep and with punishing sun plus a full stomach it gave most of us a hard challenge, at last all of us made it.
Our group at the final view point
Till now we had followed walking trails to climb the hill so it was pretty clean, but for descend we followed the jeep off road trails which was in bad condition(well bad for normal vehicle, but if you want to experience the thrill of 4X4 drive or a off road path for your Adv Bikes then it's the best road) . Being a weekend & a new year eve lot many people were visiting the place for sunset via jeeps and this was causing lot of dust and derbies on the path. We had to take the same path to reach the Homestay few of us took jeep ride to return but most of us trekked down on the same jeep trails
We were back to Homestay around 6 pm and plans to celebrate new year eve was already started. Most of us sat at the sit out area sipping tea, coffee and endless supplies of onion bajji's 😂 till all us couldn't eat anymore I guess. Around 8 pm camp fire was set up near to home stay were we all gathered played some games, songs, danced and partied till 12:30 and ended day 1 on a happy note.
Day 2
After action packed day 1 we started day 2 with a beautiful scenic sunrise from the homestay rooftop, the backdrop was just amazing with mountain range & white cloud beneath
By the time the entire group was ready it was 10 in the morning, after having a filing breakfast at homestay we head towards Hornadu Annapoorneshwari temple darshan, the vibes of this place is serene and soothing as the temple is surrounded by hills. It is believed that Sage Agastya had established the goddess in this place. Annapoorneshwari, Anna meaning rice grains or food and Poorna meaning perfect and complete, so the goddess never returns any of her deities empty stomach from her place. The prasada that's served here is so filling & tasty that you will feel like a mother is feeding you her home food. During my childhood I had visited the temple several times and stayed here at temple accommodation, the way the temple administration treats deities is like how someone would treat a guests at their home by providing all facilities at doorsteps of your room, hope its not changed much but I certainly see crowd at this temple is 50x more than what I use to remember back then
After few of us did some souvenir shopping we all started back to Bengaluru with a pitstop at Halebidu temple on the way, Suramane Waterfalls which was on the plan was dropped as it was already getting late and making it to Waterfalls would derail the return plans.
Hoysaleshwara Temple
Halebidu used to be capital city of Hoysala empire, the place was looted with several expansion drives from Delhi Sultanates. But its equally saddening to see the current generation have spoiled it further by thier encryption of names and what not.
So from here we head straight back to Bengaluru with couple of breaks on way. Around 10:40 we had reached outer Bengaluru
This was my first group trek organised by a professional team, I did learn few things and enjoyed the entire trip with like minded people around. As any group trip few things went down as we were always late to start our day, over booked homestay due to new year crowd which resulted in further delays. But having said that rest all were managed well and overall the experience was great, thanks to Sandeep for organising the trip and more thanks to Mahesh for leading the team on the ground and making sure that the team enjoys the trip.
That's the homestay booked for the trip. Its a well maintained clean facility located a few kilometers away from Hornadu just before Kyatanamakki hills on its way. Its a pure veg catering service so no non veg food is available or near by there are no places from where you can get non veg food as it located in a temple city outside from main city habitat. Food here is simple like home cooked and the homestay is run by a family who are welcoming people.
